Porcelain Tile Thickness Guide: What Buyers Should Actually Compare
Learn how tile thickness affects floor levels, handling and installation—and why strength, dimensions and support matter just as much.
Technical review: TAG Ceramic Quality Team
Tile thickness should be read together with strength and installation conditions
Buyers often compare porcelain tiles by thickness because it is easy to measure. Thickness is important for transitions, weight, packing and installation planning, but it should not be treated as a standalone quality score. Two tiles of similar thickness can have different body density, dimensions, surface systems and mechanical test results.
Where thickness affects a project
| Area | Why thickness matters | What else to check |
|---|---|---|
| Floor level / thresholds | Influences finished height with adhesive and substrate | Adhesive bed, levelling system, adjoining materials |
| Transport / handling | Changes piece and box weight | Packing strength, palletization, manual handling limits |
| Cutting / drilling | Can influence tooling and cut time | Body density, tooling, edge treatment |
| Mechanical performance | Thickness contributes to section geometry | Actual breaking-strength/modulus test data and support conditions |
| Renovation | May affect doors, skirting and existing levels | Substrate preparation and total build-up |
Nominal thickness is not the only dimensional value
Professional specifications should also consider length/width tolerances, rectangularity, straightness and surface flatness. These influence joint consistency and lippage more directly than thickness alone in many installations. Use the manufacturer's current technical sheet and the relevant standard for tolerances.
Avoid the ‘thicker is always better’ shortcut
More material can increase weight and may change mechanical behaviour, but quality depends on the engineered body and verified performance. A well-manufactured tile that satisfies the required standard and project loads is more meaningful than choosing only by the largest thickness number.
Is 8.5 mm porcelain suitable for every floor?
No universal thickness is automatically suitable for every condition. Suitability depends on the specific product's tested properties, substrate/support, traffic, installation system and project requirements.
